Brain Tales (#1 in a series.)

How did it all start? Martin was playing with PiL doing the 1980 us tour with them and upon his return fancied doing some of his own tracks. The only interest in this stuff was through his association with PiL and Martin was going to milk that for all it was worth. So he set about getting some studio time to do some demos and wrote stuff like "They've got me in a bottle".....nice. At the same time I had just returned from a tour with Cowboys International and Martin asked me to put some bass on the "Bottle" track. In the studio we called ourselves "The Guava Boys" and it was from this beginning that the Brian Brain idea grew. Martin had this immense enthusiasm and belief in what he was doing, absolutely driven to succeed, qualities he still shows to this day and on the back of this we formed the band and hit the road. It was all done in a rush and a bit of a laugh,   Martin even had the front to get on the phone and arrange a US tour, and all the while I just kept thinking "This is shit...." but I wasn't going to turn down a free ride across America. We played some memorable gigs, all for the wrong reasons! played to empty clubs on nights when no-one else would play, for amounts of money that hardly covered our petrol, with support bands that were far better than us. But we always put on a show, usually eventful in that something would go wrong or Martin would get so pissed it would be entertaining in a "Hey...look at the drunk trying to sing!! 'aint that funny!" kind of way. It was all very painful..............
