Brian Brain were playing all over the UK during the early eighties and we often had forays into the frozen wastelands of  Northern England, usually driving up and back the same night in our beaten up old van. Either I or Bobby had to drive while Martin slept it off in the back. If it was cold I would prefer to stay sober and drive, it was the only place in the vehicle where you could feel the effects of the heater! Even then it only warmed as far as your ankles. We would play anywhere that would have us, mostly for about £30-£50 a night, just enough to pay for the petrol and a pint or two. In the picture above I am candidly displaying a poster that was plastered all over Manchester at one such gig. A Thursday night in August...hardly the best of nights. These posters were everywhere, still there was nobody at the gig. I was never sure if the promoter was taking the piss by spelling both Martin  and the bands' name wrong!
